Humanity. Humanity. We are an interwoven mish-mash today. No longer isolated from one another, we have travelled, attacked and lived with one another more closely than ever before. Today, there are very few pure bloodlines. We all are descended from incredibly diverse populations. Two examples are the English and the French; the Normans and the North Americans.
Footsteps cross hoofprints on a Norman beach where William may have walked before he crossed the Channel in 1066.Almost 1,000 years later, a young man, perhaps descended from William’s Normans, waits at Portsmouth Harbour. For hundreds of years young men have waited here – 100 years ago; 70 years ago to save other descendants of Normans.70 years ago, American descendants of Normans may have landed on this beach, where today’s Normans play.Almost 100 years ago, Canadian descendants of Normans may have come to Vimy to defend against another invasion.Today’s French tend the graves of unknown Canadians who died there.English descendants of Normans play where for 2,000 years guns have defended from and attacked across the Channel.
Humanity’s ability to exhibit humanity at sites where humanity forgot itself is always amazing to me. Our ability to be the best that humanity can be is directly related to our ability to be the worst humanity can be. The most heart-healing moments are those during which we recognise where humanity has trumped the inhumane.
I'm a Canadian who loves our planet and the people living on it. I also love to travel and take pictures. I'd like to think I've improved a little, but am pretty sure there's room to be better.
